「increase」の意味・用法
「increase」という動詞は、
「 (量・数・程度などの点で) 増える、増す、増大する」という意味を表します。
したがって、自動詞としての「increase」の主語は
– the amount will increase
– the number will increase
– the rate will increase
など、数量的なものが来るのが基本になります。
「increase」のNG表現
数量的なものが主語になるのが自動詞の「increase」ですので、
– The elderly people are increasing.
– Children will increase in the future.
のような文は、不可となります。
こういった間違いは非常に多いので、留意すると良いかと思います。
では、「人が増える」と表現したい場合はどうしたらよいでしょうか？
「人が増える」と表現したい時は
英語で考える時は、
「人が増えているのではなく、人の”数”が増えている」わけですので、
頭に「the number of」を付けるというのが1つの手です。
– The number of elderly people is increasing.
（高齢者の数が増えている）
– The number of children will increase in the future.
（子供の数は将来増えるだろう）
*「the number」が単数ですので、動詞も三人称単数となるので注意です。
もしくは、「in number」（数字上で）という表現をくっつけて、
– The elderly people are increasing in number.
– Children will increase in number.
と、表現することも出来ます。
「decrease」でも同じ
これらは反義語の「decrease」でも同じです。
✖ People in this area has decreased significantly in recent years.
〇 The number of people in this area has decreased significantly in recent years.
（この地域は近年著しく人が減少している）
お金関係は「increase」がそのまま使える
「money」や「salary」などお金関係を表す名詞は「increase」がそのまま使えます。
– My salary has never increased since I joined this company.
（この会社に入ってから、私の給料は全く増えていない）
– His bonus has increased by 50 % this year.
（彼のボーナスは今年50％アップした）
