今回は意外と正解率の低いこの「deem」という単語を
おさらいしたいと思います。
テストでは出るんですが、日常であまり使わないので
忘れられがちな単語です。

「deem」の意味
「deem」は「～だと思う、見なす、判断する」という意味の表現です。
他動詞で、後ろに目的語をとります。
意味としては「think」や「consider」と同じになります。
「deem」「think」「consider」の違い
では、この3つの単語の違いは何でしょうか。
・deem フォーマルな文語、書き言葉
・consider 文語・口語どちらにも使える。think よりややフォーマル
・think 非常に一般的で文語・口語どちらにも使える。フォーマルでもカジュアルでも使う。
このように、意味は同じなのですが、使われ方や言葉の堅さに違いがあります。
つまり、フォーマル度でいうと
deem > consider > think
という感じになります。
「deem」の使い方いろいろ
「deem」は他動詞ですので、後ろに目的語をとります。その後ろに補語をとることもあります。
・deem that
The referee deemed that there was no penalty.
（審判員はノーペナルティーと見なした）
The Secretary of State deems that further investigation should be conducted.
（国務長官はさらなる調査が必要であるとみている）
・be deemed to be
The move was deemed to be successful.
（その映画は成功したと認められている）
This research is deemed to be more reliable than others.
（この研究は他の物よりも信頼できると考えられている）
・be deemed to do something
Those companies were deemed to have the potential for growth.
（それらの企業は今後の成長が期待できると見なされた）
The group was deemed to present a serious threat to the nation.
（その団体は国家に深刻な脅威を与えると見なされた）
・deem 目的語 + 補語
The panel deemed that procedure necessary.
（有識者会はその手続きが必要であると判断した）
Students can wear their own clothes if the school deems them appropriate.
（学校側が適切であると判断すれば、生徒は私服を着用することができる）
・be deemed 名詞／形容詞
The air pollution was deemed a serious danger to the citizens.
（その大気汚染は市民にとって深刻な危険であると見なされた）
The vegetables from the area has been tested and deemed safe to be put on the market.
（その地域の野菜は検査され、市場に出荷しても安全であると判断された）
